Why Should the World Go Green?

It is shocking when one considers the millions upon millions of people who are utterly clueless about environmental issues. Whether it boils down to ignorance, stupidity or inability, the results are the same. Thinking that world resources will take care of themselves, or that they are someone else's responsibility is madness, at best.

Going Green is a journey

The easiest way to help protect our resources is by using environmentally friendly products. It takes no effort whatsoever yet the results are tangible. For instance the more we use harmful solvents the more toxic our world becomes, and there is no way to undo the damage. Using materials that don't harm the world means you need to stick to it. The more you do, the more you are helping.

Yet why stop there? Green products take many forms other than cleaning materials. Clothing for instance, food, recycling and even items you use around the house. This is where our journey begins. Educate, implement and awareness is the recipe for good environmental practices. While you may not understand the benefits that your small changes can make, if you multiply them by millions then the benefits become apparent. Whatever contribution you make is worth it. Whatever contribution you make today you will be thanked for by future generations.

Everyone today is aware of the high costs in the use of the traditional energy sources as electricity, petroleum and many others. Also it has being predicted that in the next century most of the sources of these 'energies' will be depleted as the natural resources become over exploited beyond the natural replenishing rate. This has compelled us-the human beings to vigorously seek for new energy sources to service our domestic, industrial and even military needs.

The first hindrance in the exploitation of the renewable energy is the remoteness of the locations that they are found. It is true that most of the energy generated anywhere in the world is consumed in the expansive towns or cities. The location of these vital energy deposits are in places that make the viability of the projects to be impossible due to the cost; resulting from the terrain and long distances that the energy need to be transmitted.

Another shortcoming in the use of renewable energies is their dependency on climatic or geographical conditions. A renewable energy provider such as the sun (solar energy) maybe affected by lack of adequate sun exposure during cold or cloudy seasons. Also the human activity in some geographical locations may interfere with the productivity of certain renewable sources as biomas.

Just like many other global subjects, the present environmental situation is one of those topics which are SEPs or 'somebody else's problem' - to borrow a phrase from Douglas Adams. Whether the size of the task is so big that we are just not able to understand the full implication, or whether we feel that our little efforts will have such a tiny impact on the global situation that they will be worthless is hard to say.

However, if we all take on board the responsibility for making sure that we no longer waste so much of the planet's resources, then together we can ensure a more positive future for all of us. One way to reduce our carbon footprint is to convert to renewable energy where possible. If we as individuals take the decision to reduce our own carbon footprints then this equates to an impact on a global scale.

A great example of an individual who has started to use renewable energy is that of a farmer, who, rather contrarily, grows tomatoes all the year round in several giant heated greenhouses. Now, on the face of it, there is one individual who is going right against nature and using up a lot of resources for his own personal gain. Not a bit of it!
