Rapid Weight Loss Diets - How Safe Are They?

It seems these days that our lives are always hurried, we are always in a rush to get somewhere, to do something, or to get results quickly and weight loss is no different.

We all have varying amounts of weight we want to lose but we would all love to get rid of it as quickly as possible, which is exactly why Rapid Weight Loss Diets are so popular we are all so keen on a quick fix, but are they safe?

Which ever route you take to lose weight there are only three different areas you can lose it from these are water, fat, or muscle tissue. With most diets of this type you will notice an initial drop in weight caused by water loss which gets you off to a good start but it is usually quite short lived and difficult to maintain for any length of time.

Most methods of losing weight quickly, tend to involve some sort of fast or starvation diet along with methods that are highly calorie restrictive, the problem with these approaches is that instead of losing the fat that you want to get rid of you can actually lose muscle mass which is definitely counter productive and unhealthy.

When you set out to lose weight, you do not simply want weight loss - you want fat weight loss.
Here is some helpful information about protein and its role in your fat loss.

When you set out to burn fat, you do not want your body to get sidetracked into a muscle burning mode instead. This happens easily if you are not aware of how to prevent it. So in order to preserve your muscle tone, you must give your body a higher protein diet to help it retain its muscle.

Taking in a higher protein diet has a threefold effect on your body:

It builds and maintains your muscle tone. You can actually gain muscle in the midst of a fat burning regimen.

It increases your body's metabolic rate. This is the rate at which your body burns food for energy.

It increases the thermic factor that causes your body to burn fat in the digestion process. The thermic rate for digesting protein is much higher than that for digesting simple carbohydrates, and by your taking in more protein, the effect can increase up to 40% after eating.

Here is the scoop on metabolism:

Your body's metabolism is affected by three things.

What you eat.
Eat a diet high in protein. This preserves your muscle mass and provides your body with lots of energy for any exercise. It will prevent your body from tipping over into starvation mode.

Losing Weight Healthily

Losing weight is a difficult thing to achieve especially if like me, you like your food. My advice to concentrate on 3 key factors: diet, exercise and drinking water. It might seem obvious but these three things WILL make you lose weight. Fad diets DON'T work; you end up piling on any lost weight very quickly which lowers your self-esteem making you eat more!

The only way to lose weight is to do it gradually and healthily over a period of time. You also need to tailor your diet and exercise to your personal regime. If you weigh 13 stone, exercise and eat fairly healthily but aren't losing weight then this could be caused by: a.) Eating too much bad food b.) Not exercising enough.

If this is the case, identify the problem and fix it. Just because you go to the gym twice a week for an hour each time doesn't mean you can eat whatever you like for the rest of the week. Up your exercise to three or four times a week and cut down on the sugary and salty foods and you'll very quickly see a difference. Any movement helps so try walking to work, swimming, running, and the gym or dance/fitness classes. Combine this with 8 pints of water a day and you'll not only look better but you'll feel much better too. Incorporate fruit, vegetables, pulses, rice, fish, chicken a little red meat and oats into your diet. It's best to get a range of different coloured fruits and vegetables as they all contain different vitamins and minerals. Wheatgerm can lower cholesterol so sprinkle it on top of your cereal or into yoghurt. Remember when eating meals to reduce the amount of food you eat a little. A little change in diet can have a dramatic change to your waistline.
